Hi all. I am Tim Webb, co-author with Stephen Beaumont of The World Atlas of Beer and Pocket Beer Book / Guide. The Atlas is a 256-page hardback book that since the UK & US editions in 2012 has also come out French, French Canadian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian and Norwegian editions, plus one other than I can't remember right now. Pocket Beer is UK (Book) & US (Guide) only thus far, though other language editions are in the works. It is a constantly updated listing of best 1000-1200 breweries and 3000-4000 beers around the world. Between them they are a sort of illustrated chronicle of the legacy and legacy and craft beer ®evolution of the last 40 years. He went out on a limb by giving Vietnam a page of its own in each book, in part because of the new wave of brewpubs we already knew about but also because of bia hoi, sampled on a trip to Vietnam in 2009, which seems to be a genuine folk tradition of sorts. During the research we came across a claim that Vietnam had 300+ breweries before the new wave came along, and on my trip in addition to the brands that had started to be marketed nationwide by subsidiaries or fellow travellers of global brewers, I encountered a couple of bottled beers from "local" breweries - light lagers reminiscent of Czech 8 degree Plato beers. Also in Hanoi I came across several of the bia hoi street corner places and witnessed the amazingly rapid draining of light beers served by gravity from up-ended steel kegs. We are about to discuss plans for second edition of the Atlas and third of Pocket Beer. I will keep abreast of the new stuff through what is posted here but if anyone has good quality information about the background to bia hoi - who makes it, what forms it takes and where it is found - all information will be gratefully received at via www.booksaboutbeer.com.
